Workshop on Instruction on Library Use (WILU) 2004 Conference at UVic
The University of Victoria will host the WILU 2004 conference, June 14-16. This is the first time in its 33 year-history that the WILU conference is holding its annual, national conference on the West Coast.
With this year’s theme, “Riding the Wave: Library Instruction from Coast to Coast,” WILU 2004 will explore best practices in teaching pedagogy, student learning and teaching assessments, implementation of Information Literacy programs on campus and more! Presenters and delegates from academic institutions across Canada, the United States and Australia will be among 180 academic librarians and administrators attending this conference.
The timely arrival of this conference to UVic coincides with the University’s call, via the Information Technology Plan, for an increased level of user education in information literacy skills and collaborative library instruction programs between academic departments and the library, which will develop students’ critical thinking skills and discipline-based knowledge seeking skills. The UVic Libraries has also embarked on the process of implementing a campus-wide information literacy program.
Conference highlights include: The Keynote, Monday, June 14, given by Dane Ward, Associate Dean of Illinois State University Library, addressing the issue of collaborative strategies for information literacy programs in universities. At the Opening Plenary Session on Tuesday, Dr. Trudi Hahn of University of Maryland will present models of best practices for collaboration among faculty, students and librarians. On Wednesday the conference will end with a Closing Panel by Barry Cull of the University of New Brunswick and Dr. Heidi Julien of University of Alberta discussing the implementation of Information Literacy programs in East Coast academic libraries and public libraries across Canada.
