The Art of the Book

This October, 'Friends of UVic Libraries' is sponsoring the following events designed to raise the visibility of the Libraries and attract new membership.

"The Art of the Book" EXHIBIT AT McPHERSON LIBRARY GALLERY
OCTOBER 9 -27

Friends of UVic Libraries and the Maltwood Art Museum are co-sponsoring an outstanding exhibit of craftsmanship and creativity in celebration of the 20 th anniversary of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists' Guild (CBBAG). It is a juried exhibition of 74 pieces which includes works of fine book binding, papermaking calligraphy, fine printing, box-making, and pop-up books.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS DISPLAYS (Concurrent with "The Art of the Book Exhibit")

Visit Special Collections on the lower level of McPherson Library to see works by French novelist and multimedia experimentalist Michel Butor, from the collection donated by Professor Jennifer Waelti-Walters.

BOOK ARTS DEMONSTRATIONS
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2 - 8 pm
McPherson Library, Room 210

Eight Vancouver Island/Gulf Island bookbinders, conservators, papermakers, calligraphers and small press owners will demonstrate their craft and answer questions.

For those who wish to study bookbinding in more detail, the bookbinding videos from the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild will be shown throughout the day in the adjoining room 296.

GUIDED TOURS OF "The Art of the Book" EXHIBIT
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14

Exhibit award winner, Keith Valentine of Galiano Island, will give guided tours of the "Art of the Book" exhibit at 3, 5 and 7 pm in the McPherson Library Gallery.

New Curric Lab Hours

The Libraries are pleased to announce extended Sunday service hours in the Curriculum Laboratory, located in MacLaurin Building D201. The new hours are:

Monday to Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday Closed
Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Library Tours and Workshops in September

Library tours and workshops are being offered in September to coincide with New Student Orientation in the fall term:

TOURS

At the beginning of each term (September and January), McPherson Library offers library tours during New Student Orientation week. The tours take about 20 minutes.

INTRODUCTION TO THE GATEWAY AND FINDING BOOKS

This session will introduce you to the information sources and services that are available on the Libraries Gateway. You will learn how to search for books by author, title and keyword and understand the difference between keyword and subject searching. You will also learn how to locate journals held at McPherson Library.

FINDING JOURNAL ARTICLES

This session will show you how to identify journal databases relevant to your subject areas. The key concepts used to search journal databases will be demonstrated. You will also learn how to print or email the full-text of articles, when available.

FINDING QUALITY INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET

In addition to the online catalogue and journal databases, there is a myriad of material freely available on the Internet - some of it is authoritative, but much of it is ephemeral and non-scholarly. How do you tell the difference and find the good stuff? This session provides you with strategies for searching using Internet search engines and will provide you with the techniques needed to assess the quality of the resources you find.
