Hi Everyone,
Just want to remind everyone that as of May 2005 the Library Test is not mandatory for the English 100 courses.
BUT, we still have some faculty members you are going to be using it for their courses. So far we have English 115 Section F80 and Sociology 100 Section F01 who have registered to use it Fall 2005.
The library test will be open September 12 and close October 28, 2005.
If you have any faculty who wish to use the library test for the courses please let me know or have them email iwg@uvic.ca.

Hi Everyone,
The Instruction Working Group with the help of Kristin went out to each section of English 100 classes (over 40 sections!) and told the students about the library test at the beginning of January. We told students that:
1. The deadline for the test is March 1.
2. That they come to the library to talk to us if they have any problems or questions.
We added students to the library test in late December, again Last Friday and on Monday. We will do it again after the add/drop dates. This should help get most of the students into the library test.
We have also left a copy of the handout we gave to the students at the Reference Desk.

We have 48 students who have yet to complete the library test. I have sent them all an email telling them to complete the library test by November 30. After this date I am going to close the test for good this term.
The instructors in English 100 courses have been informed of this as well.

I had set the deadline for the library test for November 1, 2004. I did this so that most of the students would complete the test at least a month before classes end.
The test will be kept open till all the students have completed it. Hopefully we'll be done by the end of this month!

Not everyone may know this or remember the issues regarding the library test.
The simple rule of thumb is - if there are any problems please refer the
students to the forms on the library test page. #5 on the list sorts out all the problems the students may have.
Here are the general principles:
1. The library test is administered by the library - aka Instruction Working
group - so don't send the student back to the professor who has NO control over it.
2. Students must have a netlink id - aka a UVic email at the beginning of each
term for them to be automatically added to the library test. Computing usually does this for us because in September there are about 1,500 students that are registered in English 100 courses. During the spring-summer terms there are approximately 400 students registered in the library test.
3. If we didn't add a student into the library test in the method described in
#2 we add them as they request it. This is when the forms attached to the library test page on the Gateway comes in handy.
4. When in doubt - send the student to the form. The Instruction working group will answer the questions.
5. The library test scores are updated on a weekly basis this summer and the
marks are accessible by the professor. The instructions have been supplied to the instructors. I am sorry that we cannot give all reference librarians access to this database because it contains student numbers and marks. The Instruction Working group checked with Records and were told that only the professors should have access to these scores.
6. During the regular terms - September and January - the library test scores
are updated at a specified time and again instructors are informed of these dates.

"The library test is available all summer for students who are registered in
the English 100 courses. They may not have been added when we did it in early
spring because they did not have a netlink id at the time. So asking them to
fill out the form and sending it to us is still the way to go."
The library test is set to open next Monday, May 10. In the meantime, please direct the students to the Library Tutorial. The deadline for the library test this term is June 1, 2004. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Inba.
